About Melissa

I am a board certified pediatrician and a Lieutenant Colonel in the military. I have been blessed with five amazing children and a loving husband. After I served on active duty in Germany for three years, I returned to training in cardiothoracic surgery (CT). Only 6% of CT surgeons are women and few of these women have children. The surgeons I worked with felt that being a mother of five and a cardiac surgeon were mutually exclusive. They did not welcome me into their professional circles, and my workplace endorsed this behavior. My personal experiences have heightened my awareness that despite public initiatives, medical institutions need to be incentivized to enforce policies and enact changes that result in true inclusivity at the ground level. Pysicians and Surgeons need a place to share their experiences in order to collaborate and innovate systems that fully embrace equity despite gender, race, ethnicity, and other classes. Click below to learn more about how you can contribute to this much needed cultural change in medicine.

Listen to these stories and then listen to your colleagues. Women need to help women. --Starlett17
